Meet the Team

Dr Melanie Ackers

Dr Melanie Ackers

Content and Education Adviser

Working with children and young people for over 20 years and practicing as an educational psychologist, Dr Melanie Akers is a founding director of eAWARE.

Following her doctorate research on cyberbullying and online child behaviour, Dr Ackers became acutely aware of the varying levels of risks many young people are exposed to online and noted the gap in young people’s education relating to this subject. This concern became even more personal following the birth of her two young children. It was at this point she began discussing the importance of creating an organisation which helped young people understand online risk, supported schools to educate on these risks and aided families in having open and honest conversations about online risks.

Dr Acker’s is central to our Product Development team using her expert knowledge of psychology and child development to create both our learning materials and unique assessments.

Michael Duke

Michael Duke

Content and Education Adviser

Following 30 years as an educational psychologist, Michael retired from his role as principal educational psychologist in North Wales with the desire to support an organisation which shared his ethos of wanting to protect young people from online dangers.

In 2015 he, along with our other directors, formed eAWARE utilising his 6 years teaching experience and 30 years experience as an educational psychologist to create a platform that allowed teachers to effectively deliver education related to online safety.

Michael works closely with Dr Ackers, Joe and Sam within Product Development, ensuring our assessments and learning materials are both up to date and inline with current research on both child development and potential online risks.

Joe Brewer

Joe Brewer

Content and Communications

Joe graduated university in 2012 and originally intended to pursue a career in teaching. Instead, following a child protection disclosure, he decided his skills were best utilised outside the classroom and followed a desire and passion for protecting those who cannot protect themselves. This led Joe to specialise in Online Child Protection working with the Internet Watch Foundation. During his time at the IWF Joe was at the frontline in the fight against Online Child Sexual Abuse, working in-conjunction with CEOP, Europol, Interpol and organisations such as Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Twitter. Drawing on this experience Joe has become uniquely placed to understand how predators utilise the internet to groom and exploit minors, robbing them of their dignity, rights and innocence.

He joined eAWARE in 2016 as our Communications and Content Development Manager with the desire to work for an organisation that was the industry leader in ensuring young people, parents and the school community are empowered with the skills necessary to be safe online.

Sam leads our Operations, Recruitment and Sales teams whilst also working alongside Joe, Dr Ackers and Michael within Product Development.
